The Brompton Electric 2021

With the Brompton Electric folding bike, you can commute farther while not getting too tired or sweaty on your way to your destination.

Just like the original Brompton, you get the same high-quality folding bike. And the same compact fold.

The main difference is that you get an integrated motor that assists your pedaling output to tackle hills and headwinds with ease and gets you off the line with a boost at stop lights.

Assistance while pedaling

The Brompton Electric is part of the Class 1 eBike category, and provides assistance only while pedaling.

You get a maximum assisted speed of 15mph with an average range of 20-45 miles.

With the option to use your own pedal power to ride faster and further. Or when you don’t require pedal assistance, you can turn it off and ride it just like a normal Brompton with nearly zero rolling resistance from the motor.

How was the Brompton Electric developed?

The Brompton Electric was developed in collaboration with Williams Advanced Engineering.

Williams Advanced Engineering are experts in Formula One & Formula E motorsports racing.

The electric assist system is a custom 250W front hub motor powered by a 300Wh battery.

In order to regulate speed and make sure this extra power translates into a smooth riding experience, the bike continually analyzes data from two sensors.

There’s one sensor in the bottom bracket that measures the rider’s cadence and power. And another sensor within the motor that measures the speed of the bike.

A battery pack that is cleverly integrated

The Brompton Electric’s battery pack is cleverly integrated inside the Essential bag that is included with the bike.

Similar to traditional Brompton luggage, the Essential bag attaches to the front frame of the bike so it doesn’t impact stability while you steer.

It’s easily removed with just one click, making it easy to carry the folded bike in one hand and the battery bag over your opposite shoulder.

This is particularly useful for multi-modal commuters who regularly bring their bike on public transport.

The Essential bag is 1.5L with some additional space for the charging cable and other small items.

You can also opt to increase your storage with the City bag – an available accessory that has room for larger items like a laptop.

A fast fold

Just like the original Brompton, the Brompton Electric folds within 20 seconds into a shape roughly 24″ x 24″ x 12″, all while providing a ride that is as comfortable as you’d expect from a normal (non-folding) bike.

The Brompton Electric 2021 offers a staggering amount of advantages over a traditional bike.

With the Brompton Electric, theft is no longer a concern. You can bring your Brompton into the smallest of apartments.

It’s easy to carry upstairs, and goes unnoticed aboard buses and trains.

Also, if you live in a place where weather changes and you dislike riding in inclement weather, the Brompton lets you ride when it’s nice. And easily take the bike home with you in a carpool with a friend or coworker, a taxi, a bus, or a train.

The list goes on, but you get the idea. The Brompton is nearly infinitely versatile.

Brompton Electric comes in three colors

The Brompton Electric is available in three colors: Black, Bolt Blue, and Turkish Green. The white has been discontinued.

You can choose from two different handlebar options

There are two handlebar options: M-type (a medium-rise bar) and H-type (a high-rise bar).

Choose your gearing option

There’s also two gear options: 2 or 6 speed. With the option to increase your degrease the size of the front chainring.

The Brompton Electric 6 speed is achieved via a Sturmey-Archer 3 speed hub and a proprietary Brompton 2-speed derailleur.

Brake levers

Two flat-bar style brake levers control a pair of road style caliper rim brakes. The right brake lever has an attached bell.

Fenders

As with most of the Brompton bikes, the Brompton Electric 2021 comes with fenders.

Its tires are a pair of Schwalbe Marathon Racers, a light and grippy, puncture-resistant tire.

The saddle included is Brompton’s black saddle.

We are creating a better place ... where we help you get to work or to the shops or just get out for a ride in a fun, healthy and environmentally responsible way - and with the right equipment so that you are pretty sure it's not going to be a one way trip. We started vittually in 2009, selling bicycle tools, spare parts and accessories using the Internet. In 2013 we opened our first shop in Chobham, Surrey, England so we now provide full mechanical service on all types of bikes (service, repair, upgrades and custom builds) as well as sales of new bikes from Brompton, Frog (children's bikes), Orbea (mountain, road and hybrid / comfort) and Pashley (British built classic bicycles). To us, cycling doesn't mean you have to race at elite level (though is there any reason not to?) - why not just take your bike next time you go to the Post Office or local shops? But maybe you need to do something, to make your bike better for that ride - repairing something or adding lights to keep you safer - for example? We hope you will find what you need here to help you keep cycling or re-kindle the love affair with your bike.
