Give Me The Simple Life On A Xootr!

Today, “Give Me the Simple Life”: back on my Xootr Street scooter, for a ride up the Lario Park Trail along the San Gabriel River, in Irwindale CA. 200’ altitude gain going up, 5.5 miles round trip.

A spoiled relationship with my Xootr Street scooter?

I wondered if my recent experience on a Swifty scooter had somehow forever spoiled my relationship with my Xootr Street scooter. Would Swifty’s longhorn handlebars leave me uncomfortable with Xootr’s handlebars that are only half as wide? Would I feel somehow exposed riding a Xootr that isn’t as big as a Swifty? Would it be like riding a Lambretta motor scooter after getting used to a Harley Davidson road hog?

The tall platinum blonde wasn’t as well-balanced

Would my Xootr Street scooter decide to take me back?
Would my Xootr Street scooter decide to take me back?

I’d gone ahead and had some dates with the tall platinum blonde who’d caught my eye. It turned out she wasn’t as well-balanced, nor could she be steered as easily as my Xootr. And I had to work one and a half times as hard to dance with her. More leg work. So I decided to return to the partner I’d had before, my trusted and true Xootr Street scooter. Would she take me back?

Unwarranted anxiety

It felt great getting back on my Xootr Street scooter.

My anxiety was unwarranted. It felt great getting back on my Xootr, and somehow the extra work I’d had to do scooting the Swifty from its higher floorboard was like having done some exercise in the gym that revved up my ability to do scoots from the lower Xootr floorboard.

The 13” wide handlebars that I’d feared might now be cramped felt just right, with nothing protruding outboard that might increase risk of physical contact with a passing bicyclist.

A relaxing ride up the Lario Park Trail

I enjoyed a relaxing ride up the Lario Park Trail to my usual turnaround at the Mountain Laurel Way Bridge. This bridge crosses the San Gabriel River to an isolated community enclave called Mountain Cove, that’s really part of Azusa. Few people on the trail today. I had it almost all to myself. Everything felt good, in synch with the Universe.

520 scoots up, with a modest tail wind, and 360 scoots back.
My thoughts about the Swifty vs the Xootr became clear. At the end of the day, I don’t like being wedded to a large and unwieldy mechanical device.

Why I prefer the Xootr scooter

I strongly prefer the feeling I get while propelling myself along on a scooter engineered to give me maximum freedom and mobility, using a Xootr that’s designed to be just what I need to make my journey through life, without unnecessary frills.

Jonathan Kelley, 80, was born in Boston, and educated at Exeter and Princeton, then Harvard Medical School, after a year teaching English in Cali, Colombia. He was a Navy anesthesiologist during Viet Nam. He spent the middle decades of his life working in a community hospital in Northern California. Besides his career in medicine, he’s a chef, pianist, and actor in his artistic life. In the kitchen, he specializes in croissants and cooking with coconuts. At the piano, it’s boogie woogie and Joplin rags. As an actor, he’s done fourteen seasons in a Mexican Christmas play in Los Angeles, plus the occasional movie role, as in the soon-to-be-released feature film “Amor en 266 Millas,” where he plays the hippie patriarch of a desert commune in the Antelope Valley. He has two books available on Amazon, “Counting Backwards from 100: My Life as an Anesthesiologist,” and “Short Stories by Jonathan Kelley.” Searching for improved balance and leg strength at age 77, Jonathan came by chance upon a Xootr scooter. Jonathan’s wife is the lovely Puerto Rican actress Gloria Laino. Their mix is like Puerto Rican arroz con gandules served next to New England style cranberry sauce.
