My scooter buddy Jorge and I enjoyed a 6.2 mile ride this morning on the Whittier Greenway Trail in Whittier, CA.
The start of the ride
Weather was cool when we started out, then there was full sunshine as we got back close to our starting point. We talked about the issues of the day; family, politics, kids, and what we’ve been up to the last week or so.
Always there is the recognized issue that we’re getting older: I’m about a decade older than he is, and we both see that there may come a time when kick scooting is no longer the right activity for us. I’m 81. He’s 72.
We conclude that exercise is good; kick scooting is an excellent way to preserve if not enhance leg strength and balance.
In some way that we cannot fully grasp, getting out there on the bike trails and propelling ourselves along on our Xootr scooters helps our minds and bodies, in a strange balance that has yet to be explained.
A sound mind in a sound body
This proverb is of Greek origin. It’s a balance. You have to use your mind: Think. Talk. Read. Reason. But you have to use your body too. Exercise. Be physically active.
Don’t waste your time playing computer games all day. In some undefined way you’ll have much better quality of life if you follow this recommendation of the Greeks.
Try with me to think of a way to get everybody off their cell phones, away from game apps, away from a crazy life wasted on repetitive internet artificialities.
Changing the world
If you want to change the world, start with yourself, said Mohandas Gandhi. So, I’m headed out to the bike trails on my Xootr scooter, again in a day or two, for another hour or two moving along in fresh air. Come and join me!
