Today’s 9:00 am ride in the summer sunshine was on the Rio Hondo Bike Path from Grant Rea Park in Montebello, CA down to the hairpin loop trail NW of Treasure Island Park in Downey. 8.6 m RT, 190 ft elevation change between the start and the turnaround point, 640 scoots each way.
About an hour and half, total, including a stop for water and a power bar on the way back, at the bike bridge north of where Washington Bvd crosses the river.
All the way to Treasure Island?
My ride was two or three miles more than my usual distance. I thought about going all the way to Treasure Island, which probably would have made it a 10 mile round trip ride, but decided that because it was turning into a hot day, and because everything was working so well, I shouldn’t push it.
A perfect ride on the Rio Hondo bike path
It was indeed a perfect ride. I marveled at the fact that my feet, my knees, and my back all functioned painlessly and effectively as I glided along at probably double what would have been my fastest pace on foot.
A few conversations along the way
I enjoyed nods from the several bicyclists I passed, plus brief conversations with an overweight, sweaty guy out for his three times a week 5.5 mile walk on the trail, plus Ed, a 74 year old gentleman sitting on a shaded bench beside the trail, who told me of his knee arthritis, bone on bone, how he’d considered knee replacements but turned them down because of the few months of post op pain he’d have, how he lives here and there, in motels and cheap hotel rooms.
I wondered if he really lived in a tent on the trail somewhere. Sounded like it.
A ride that goes under three railroad bridges
This ride goes under three railroad bridges. I seemed to ride under freight trains going both ways on all of them. Saw hundreds of Evergreen shipping containers on the eastbound trains.
What’s those Evergreen containers carrying?
The Port of L.A. must be busy, which is a good sign for the world economy. Where were the Evergreen containers going, and what were they carrying? Linking up with Ever Given for her next trip through the Suez Canal, I wondered?
