Xootr Street Kick Scooter Ride To Glendale Narrows Riverwalk

When I’ve ridden the Los Angeles River Trail in the past, I’ve noted that for a short distance upstream on the north side of the Los Angeles River, just after its confluence with Verdugo Wash from the northeast, there’s an inviting paved path for pedestrians and cyclists. Today’s the day to ride it, on my Xootr Street kick scooter.

It looks on maps.google as if the trail begins at Fairmont and Flower, in Glendale, just downstream from the Dreamworks Animation studio, and that there’s curbside parking permitted on Flower near crosswalk access to the trail.

Numerous low islands covered with greenery.

Starting out, I scooted about a quarter mile downstream to the southeast end of the trail, where the wash and the river join. At this peninsula-point dead end, I particularly enjoyed the vistas of the river, with blue water all the way across, and numerous low islands covered with greenery.

My Navy duty at the end of Vietnam

It reminded me of my Navy duty at the end of Vietnam, where I’d stand on the bow of the helicopter carrier I was on, which had the mission of sweeping mines from the waterways to Haiphong.

Tall Islands.
Tall Islands.

At least twice, we spent weeks at anchor several miles outside Haiphong harbor amidst exquisitely beautiful uninhabited green islands, each one rising hundreds of feet from the sea.

I (and others) would use fishing line and small nets to lower jars of Skippy peanut butter to gratefully smiling North Vietnamese fishermen in their weathered sailing craft as they eased under the bow of our ship. Human to human contact.

Garden Street

Returning back upstream, past the Flower Street access point, the trail continues a half mile to a beautiful residential section on Garden Street. Trees. Cozy bungalows. Zillow says the houses go for $900 K to $1.5 M.

I could live there any day if I could afford it. But there are many places I’d like to live, and it’s impossible to flit back and forth from one to another on a whim every year or two. Make your decisions. Live with them.

Bette Davis Picnic Area

Across the intersection with Riverside Drive is the Bette Davis Picnic Area. I went up Riverside Drive to the left, and crossed the river to stand again at the gate where I’d made U turns on my earlier rides up the Los Angeles River Trail on the west side of the river. Threading the needle.

A short Xootr Street scooter ride

End of the trail.
End of the trail.

It was a short ride, three miles round trip, but unusually pleasant because of my discovery of the great neighborhood along Garden Street, and the charming park at the lower tip of the trail. And now it’s all part of me, and I’m part of it.

Jonathan Kelley, 80, was born in Boston, and educated at Exeter and Princeton, then Harvard Medical School, after a year teaching English in Cali, Colombia. He was a Navy anesthesiologist during Viet Nam. He spent the middle decades of his life working in a community hospital in Northern California. Besides his career in medicine, he’s a chef, pianist, and actor in his artistic life. In the kitchen, he specializes in croissants and cooking with coconuts. At the piano, it’s boogie woogie and Joplin rags. As an actor, he’s done fourteen seasons in a Mexican Christmas play in Los Angeles, plus the occasional movie role, as in the soon-to-be-released feature film “Amor en 266 Millas,” where he plays the hippie patriarch of a desert commune in the Antelope Valley. He has two books available on Amazon, “Counting Backwards from 100: My Life as an Anesthesiologist,” and “Short Stories by Jonathan Kelley.” Searching for improved balance and leg strength at age 77, Jonathan came by chance upon a Xootr scooter. Jonathan’s wife is the lovely Puerto Rican actress Gloria Laino. Their mix is like Puerto Rican arroz con gandules served next to New England style cranberry sauce.
